The sculpture for the second entrance to the award winning development, at Essex Regiment Way was developed by artist Matthew Lane Sanderson. The sphere is scaled to the adjacent architecture, the location at the top end of the linear park defines the axis of the site and invites the viewer to explore the park-lands.
Matthew drew on pantheist mythologies for the core concept. The idea of the crown developed as we discussed the themes and the form of the sphere – so the sphere created by the tree – stag reflected in the lake (the horizontal plane) is a play on the royal imagery of the antlered stag, the kings crown. The sphere is held like a jewel in clawed paws positioned at the top of the crown.
